The first day of 2015 and Sketch Dailies has won me over all over again. Great idea to go with Marty McFly to start the new year off with. Luckily the tv had Back to the Future on tv. I wasn’t able to really draw anything earlier in the day but just watching it for a bit gave me a couple of funny concepts.
With the New Year around the corner I thought about an image that would kick off 2015. I have been randomly watching Samurai Champloo late night so it’s pretty easy to see where the costume design is inspired from.
Ever so often I like to try digital painting with the short brushes it really has an effect on my character designs.
Some late night casual skimming through some classic manga has driven me to experiment with a more realistic look. I am going to blame it on all the synth-80’s music I have been listening to.
Once I figure out some problems with shades and more steady line value all the way through, I definitely want to try doing some prints.

Last year I got into the habit of creating my own card for the holiday season. I wanted to deviate from the traditional card concept I started with in earlier thumbnail doodles.
It’s always fun to apply new techniques I have learned throughout the year for the yearly holiday card.
Ended up on The Sartorialist the other night and did a quick character sketch. I had to drop some color on this the same night.
Sketch Dailies theme the other night was Kermit the Frog. Sometimes ideas come to me and sometimes they don’t in this case once I came across the theme and knew what I wanted to do almost immediately.
So the official trailer for Star Wars Episode VII showed up on iTunes this morning in all it’s 1080p glory. I am not a huge Star Wars fan but I definitely am a JJ Abrams fan.
One of my favorite scenes was a character named Daisy on a jet bike coasting along the desert. Figured I would throw my hat in the Star Wars fanart game.
After seeing Disney’s Big Hero 6 recently I began looking into the concept art for that film. In particular the loose brush work that some concept artists use for their concept work.
I wanted to try learning this technique it has a really cool look. For those familiar with current Marvel, Gwen Stacey is alive and she is Spider Woman on another earth.
This painting technique is just blocking out basic colors and afterwards just dark value lines to accent shapes that would otherwise get lost. I am still tweaking and trying to figure it out.
Sketch Dailies posted Snow White as the theme the other night. For this concept illustration I imagined what if the tale of Snow White was told from an African perspective.
This year I realized I developed a bit of an addiction to Sketch Dailies. Usually on the way home I think about the character design if it’s really good I start right away.
It was fun just using rough 5-10pt brushes not very complex and it has a simple fun look to it.
Cartoon Network recently premiered a mini series called Over the Garden Wall. It was surprisingly dark and very well done. I came across the Tumblr community’s take on the two main characters Wirt and Greg and decided to do my own take on fanart for the show.
Did a quick sketch while drawing some other stuff. I wanted to see how quickly I could render her if I took a couple of shortcuts compared to my usual rendering process. I came up with a couple of tricks I need to try on something with more environment in it.
