Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange, I was reading about the trailer synopsis that premiered at the Disney D23 expo. I wanted to do a quick illustration.

The other day I came across a site that features Costume Design. After a little research I had to try doing a character heavily based on authentic armor design and construction.

I am not familiar with Marvel’s Devil Dinosaur, but I love the character sketches of the heroine Moon Girl. After seeing the news that night I had to do a little something.

Weekly Wrap-Up 8-02-15

I had quite a backlog of recent illustrations that need some clean up prior to posting. Spending a lot of time just paper, brush-pen and a couple of micron markers. Drawing on paper just feels so much better than trying to do quick characters and scenes on the computer.

The other day thought about a strange mash-up Stevangelion Steven Universe x Neon Genesis Evangelion. This is the first result more to come.

Right after watching the latest DC animation movie Justice League: Gods and Monsters I had to do a quick Batman sketch. I found it last week redrew it on a larger sheet added a bit of color, up next Superman then Wonder Woman of course.

Summer movie season almost at the home stretch. This Ant-Man illustration is the third concept I actually went with, the other designs after rough blue line sketches didn’t turn out so hot. It’s great I am getting comfortable with just dropping an illustration prior to inking if it just doesn’t feel right on point.

One of the best things about summertime is finding the right tune for the warm days. One of my favorites is “Fun” by Pitbull featuring Chris Brown. Miami Vice was an awesome series and a pretty cool movie for what it was so, it was fun to channel the laid back vibe of Miami and the song with a sunny Florida like color palette.

I need to make time to watch the Nina Simone documentary that popped up on Netflix a while back. Hearing Lauren Hill cover one of her tracks is quite astounding, she does an amazing job. This brush pen illustration was done a couple of weeks ago but I never decided if I wanted to do a full background, I ended up just playing the colors.

I really enjoy watching comic professionals sit at a booth and do quick head/character sketches. I wanted to try, so I bought a couple of blank variants and these are the results. I have to really put sometime into getting the character into the world a bit more before I try doing these covers with so much background in them. Also grey markers will also help add a bit more dimension to the world.

Last but not least, I had to do a quick sketch for Rowdy Roddy Piper RIP. He was an icon of the 80’s wrestling era, the star of “They-Live” and of course Saint’s Row 4…so good, so very good.

Weekly Wrap-Up 7-20-15

Busy weekend spent working on designing a friend of mine’s companies branding identity. I will have a slew of logo’s I will eventually post here when they decide on a final layout. Besides that I did manage to do a couple of for fun illustrations.

RIP Nintendo President Satoru Iwata. It wasn’t until his passing I really knew what an accomplished programmer he was.

Sketch Dailies weekend topic was Charmander from the Pokemon series. I wanted to try something Jake Parker has inspired me to do “draw people just having fun and being whimsical”.

During a bit of a drawing block stumbled onto Hellboy on tv. I did a couple of quick doodles earlier and ended up finishing this up. It’s had to draw Hellboy without thinking how Mike Mignola does his shadows.

Weekly Wrap-Up 07-12-15

I did a good chunk of sketches this week. Last weeks art road block seems to have passed for now. Really exciting stuff coming out of San Diego comic con, just a shame it’s tough to actually get tickets in the nerd is cool era.

Congrats to Serena Williams on her 6th Wimbledon Win, like Nike says “Just Do It”

Mid-friday the first cast photo of the new Ghostbusters hit the internet. I am counting down the days. Really interested to see what they do in terms of how does this relate to the 80’s Ghostbusters crew.

Can’t believe Invader Zim is back. Hopefully this will lead the way to a new animated series on Netflix. I did a quick sketch the day I saw the news the covers were released.

Just a quick model reference pose illustration. These are always fun quick doodles on paper. Ever so often I like to grab one and drop some color on it.

Process Breakdown 6-7-15

I like to do fashion sketches the folds in the fabric the many styles of clothing always provide an interesting challenge. This image from The Sartorialist proved to be a lot of fun.

Late night I like to sketch on paper it feels good to use traditional media at the end of the day. Most of the time I do a couple of quick sketches and never try to focus too much on background etc. It’s me trying to work on building layers upon layers of color based on the light situation.

step1-6-7-15

If I find a sketch in particular that works I might like in this case scan it and clean the lines for coloring in Photoshop.

step2-6-7-15

Before getting to the coloring I have learned try and map out the light and dark spots this makes all the difference for final rendering.

step3-6-7-15

After I know where my highlights and shadows are, I hide it and drop base colors for all the parts.

step4-6-7-15

This is my favorite part. I have a set base of folders that have my light values and another set of folders with my base colors. At this point it’s a lot of blending and adjusting of layers to get the final image.

Weekly Wrap-up 5-31-15

Another busy week trying to squeeze blog updates into the week. Last month I did some NBA sketches I put aside, this week I revisited a couple of them and dropped some color in them.

Besides that finally got around to watching Kung Fury. It was everything those guys promised to deliver. The plot could have come out of a Family Guy skit and the soundtrack mostly by Mitch Murder was perfect.

Also, did this as a coloring warm up the other night.

Weekly Wrap-up 05-04-15

I have been busy the last two weeks so this post is a bit of a catch up. The reason for all the Avengers stuff is because my daily practice site Sketch Dailies did an all Avengers daily topic posting. Along with that a couple of reference sketches.
